Consultant  

A Consultant serves as a primary day-to-day client contact, working independently on 2-3 small-to-medium retainer clients simultaneously (or one big retainer client) to offer ongoing PR consultation. The Consultant manages work and information flows to the account team and possesses an in-depth understanding of the client’s business, industry, media outlets, and PR issues.  The Consultant will perform fundamental PR tasks such as media outreach and press material development and must have strong research, writing and editing skills.  The focus of a Consultant is to work effectively with both senior and junior staff and possesses maturity, enthusiasm, and strong people skills.

Career Path: A Consultant supervises Senior Associates, Associates, Account Coordinators, and Interns. The position normally requires 1-3 years of experience at a Senior Associate (Agency), Specialist, or Assistant Manager (in-house) level. The next career step is Senior Consultant, which requires a solid 1-4 years of experience at this position. 

Primary Responsibilities

Client Counselling  

Develop an in-depth understanding of clients’ business and products

Provide essential client counsel, especially on tactical and implementation areas; troubleshoot client and internal issues

Earn clients’ trust by continually meeting deadlines, offering valued advice, and working proactively, strategically and creatively. Ensure that the client is informed of all relevant account activities, including budget status

Prepare briefing documents and present at the client’s PR or GR events as an agency representative to do onsite client briefing and event management

Participate in client meetings and presentations

Generate new ideas for clients; conduct brainstorms; evaluate and analyze programs; conduct research on client issues; seek out new opportunities and bring clients new ideas

Media and Government Relations

Generate story ideas and topic angles; pitch to clients’ target media outlets and other external stakeholders, providing feedback to clients on coverage and impact 

Become actively involved in representing clients to the media or other stakeholders.

Track and monitor media outlets for coverage of client news, competitor developments, and industry issues

Participate in and provide support for on-site trade shows; manage speakers’ activities and award opportunities

Manage external vendors and supervise logistics such as venue set-up and decoration, photo shoots, translations, and printing and video production

Writing

Compose plans that cover most regular communications programs and contribute to the process of developing advanced or sophisticated PR proposals

Develop, proof-read, and edit PR press releases, customer profiles, bylined articles, case studies, fact sheets, bios, and other client-related PR materials as needed

Demonstrate writing excellence when crafting internal and client materials and correspondence

Leadership 

Delegate work to Interns, Coordinators, Associates, and Senior Associates as needed

Supervise staff by mentoring and coaching, consistently providing feedback and holding them accountable 

Serve as a role model to team members in three areas: capability, attitude, and behavior

Balance workload between accounts and account staff to ensure that all work is accurate and completed within established deadlines

Informally add feedback to performance reviews of team members as needed

Know the limits of one’s expertise and bring in appropriate senior staff as needed

Introduce agency offerings to clients for organic growth; initiate new business processes and display strong presentation skills during new client pitches

Talk intelligently about the agency at external meetings and industry functions

Administrative Support

Develop and manage budgets and programs

Handle monthly client billing processes based on client and vendor contracts, payment schedules, and completed work, ensuring deadline and budget adherence

Track time and budget with precision and on a day-to-day basis

Cross-reference and forward invoices to the Accounting Department

Perform other administrative tasks as assigned

Requirements:

Bachelor's degree from 985/211 universities. Majors related to communications, marketing, politics preferred

At least 4 years of relevant experience in public relations or related fields including research, advertising, marketing, management consulting, media and publishing 

Previous experience in a public relations agency preferred

Experience with effectively managing multiple accounts and serving as the daily client contact

Excellent written and verbal communications skills in both Chinese and English; ability to write for media and client manager- and director-level audiences

Demonstrated knowledge of China’s business environment and traditional and social media

Demonstrated knowledge of media pitches, media planning, and event management

Demonstrated potential in strategic and analytical thinking skills in research, situational analysis, planning, media, and government and crisis communication

Work location: Beijing

Travel requirement: In-the-city travel for meetings is estimated to be 1-2 times every week. Estimated maximum 1-2 short trips to other cities such as Shanghai or tier-2 cities in China every month for meetings or events. Normally, North Head will provide single-room accommodation at a 4-star (or above) hotel as well as flights or first-class train seats

Computer skills: Advanced skills in software for knowledge workers including Microsoft Office, Google or Baidu analytics, social media tools and applications, and photo and video editing (preferred)

Interpersonal skills: 

With client: Frequent day-to-day communications by email or phone. Often, bi-weekly or monthly client face-to-face meetings

With other external stakeholders: Act as a client representative to visit stakeholders on a regular basis. May need to contact or make calls to important media reporters, government officials, or KOLs to advance client needs and build relations

With colleagues: Frequent face-to-face communications with team members in the same office. May need to work in projects spanning multiple teams

Others: May need to act as a host for events
